Out of hiding (briefly)

Hmmm. . . been a while, eh?

Two weekends ago Judy and I were in Kansai to attend the wedding of the daughter of a family friend. It was our first time to attend a wedding in Japan and Judy’s first time to attend a wedding ever (not counting our own), so it was all new to us and a pretty great time.

The couple met through omiai, which is still surprisingly somewhat common these days in Japan, and only first met four months ago, if you can believe it. Nevertheless, they seem to make a great couple.

The happy couple

After arriving on Saturday in the small city of Kashihara, Nara where the wedding was to be held the following day, Judy and I had a few hours to kill so we took a walk to explore the area. Whilst enjoying our leisurely perambulation, we happened upon something truly glorious, the likes of which we had never seen before:

OOOH YEAAAH

Yes, that’s right. We finally got our hands on a Nintendo DS Lite, which are still incredibly hard to come by in Tokyo. It seems that the solution for Tokyoites wishing to obtain one is to go out to Bumfuck, Nowhere, where they’re apparently aplenty. Anyhow, it has turned out to be tons of fun to play and so, combined with watching World Cup matches, it’s been hard for me to focus my attention on this site, let alone on anything else even remotely productive.

But enough rambling, back to Mario. . . .

  2. Haha, sorry I “borrowed” (okay, stole) your photo off of Flickr as a temporary measure because I have been without a camera for the past week and it was exactly the shot I had in mind. I was hoping that I could get away with it for one day without anyone noticing

I apologize for failing to give you proper credit and I promise it’s only temporary!

  5. Well, the photo has been replaced with a crappier one taken by yours truly, who has learned a very valuable lesson about image theft from this experience.

  6. The couple in the picture looks like they’re at a prom…was it really a wedding?

Japanese people and their westernized (is that a word?) version of weddings…

Cool gadget!! I want one too!
Did you get the dictionary thingie?

  8. You can get DS Lite in Akihabara if you know where to go. But they ask 19.800 for it and it is supposed to sell $129 in US. What gives?

  9. Oscar: The bride actually had three wardrobe changes during the reception — first a white dress for the ceremony, then the cocktail dress pictured followed by another violet cocktail dress later, and lastly, a kimono. :P (The groom also changed clothes a couple of times.)

And yep, got the dictionary — it’s proven to be quite handy.

Hunter: It’s amusing to hear of people getting them in the States while they’re still for the most part sold out in Tokyo!

/mek: Yeah, I could have also just gotten one through Yahoo Auctions, but I was determined to not pay anything more than list price. Unfortunately, however, since I didn’t get it at Bic Camera I wasn’t able to use my pointcard!
